you're watching cbs5 "eyewitness news." high definition. >> all of a sudden i heard a big crash, i went to the window, everybody was running around over here, screaming hard and going on. >> trees falling, how we are outages, look at the problems all over the bay caused by the latest storm. >> a problem in the harbor, just over a week since the tsunami hit, that contributed to most of the damage. a major shake-up in 2 cell phone industry, the deal that will vault at&t over verizon to become the largest carrier. spring came in like a lion that had a blustery storm that toppled trees all over the pay area. anne mackovic tells us?

you want to celebrate the death of an 150-year-old oak tree. >> reporter: a degree that broke this tech railing and ripping out a gas line that service israelised the house. >> lots of leaves fall on the house. >> reporter: in san francisco it was a man-made wonder that took a fall with the wind whipping. this sign came off of this building overnight landing on oh ferrell street near union square. >> i went to the window, everybody was running across the way. >> luckily no one was hurt. a street fell onto a car on k czar at lincoln avenue just after midnight w the ground saturated we could be seeing a lot more tree damage this week. >> it's good in one sense because we're getting a lot more rain. bad in another in that it hasn't slid down. i would expect to see a lot of trees falling in the next couple days here. >> reporter: and more rain falling. but hopefully not to the level that caused this flooding on the 380 on-ramp from 101.

or the power outages caused by falling trees and lines. today thousands of people weather out of power across the bay area. as pg&e worked to restore the lines? we're used to it here, happens quite often unfortunately. >> this fallen tree isn't just aen inconvenience for this household this. roadway is now blocked and it's one of the only ways in and out of this neighborhood. >> the only other way out is all the way around the loop and it goes down to molina but we're okay. >> everybody is okay. >> reporter: better in comparison to the old oak tree. >> we're just going to have to live with it. i'm going to be very sad and the house is gonna look very different without it. >> reporter: in mill valley, anne mackovic, cbs5. things are starting to return to normal after santa cruz after the march 11th tsunami. the south harbor re-opened and boat owners returned to assess damage and start making repairs. some are questioning the harbor's design and say it may have contributed to the $26 million damage there. others say the way the tsunami

hit was also a factor. >> the way the harbor is situated on the bay and the way the tsunami came at was ideal for creating a situation where it resulted in so much damage such as not like places like monterey. >> it's not clear when the north harbor will reopen. the repairs are also going slowly mostly because of the weather. more than 5" of rain has fallen there over the week. it hampered repairs to docks and stopped retrieving boats. once the rain goes pay way they can get a better idea on the damage caused by the tsunami. the city says the repair bill will be in the tens of millions of dollars and they are hoping the federal government will provide some aid. travelers are having a hard time getting to and from the sierra, the storm that hit

overnight continues to dump more snow. interstate 80 was dumped from placer county to the nevada state line. it is open but chains are required and no large trucks are allowed. the good news, the latest storm has pushed the snow pack in tahoe up to 158% of the average for this time of year. it may be the first day of spring, doesn't seem like it though, carlo says spring-like weather is still a ways away. lawrence. >> doesn't look like we're going to have a water shortage this year, the ground is saturated and we still have more storms coming our way which could cause some problems. let's look at the latest high def done radar, you can see some showers taking place around the bay area, an interesting day, we have had some sunny spots, really beautiful weather, all of a sudden you get one of these cells rolling in overhead, it can get that rain coming down in a hurry and pretty hard. in fremont, a pretty good cell,

milpitas, that's coming in your direction. near mountainview, we have had storms heading into the east bye. some of that continues to linger in the area. just making its way east of concord now you see some of them making their way into antioch and brentwood. we have more scattered showers continuing there, looks like we're not done with the rain just yet. more rain on the way, oh stronger storms come in our direction. this is going to add to some very impressive totals, that's the latest from here, an. >> back to you. >> it was range the time a car with five teenagers in it crashed in antioch. the driver lost control and crashed into a retaining wall and then the car overturned. 19-year-old passenger was killed, the other four teens were injured. one of them critically. there is no official word if weather contributed to the crash. hasan josi man attending a republican convention after- party died after collapsing on the dance floor.

dez mcneigh, the head of the silicon valley taxpayers association collapsed last night at the sheraton hotel in sacramento. he was taken to the hospital where he died earlier this morning. he was a nuclear energy consultant, a u.s. navy veteran, and a three-time republican candidate for state assembly. the cause of his death is unknown, he was 64. tomorrow marks the beginning of the barry bonds perjury trial. he is accused of lying to a grand jury. in 2003 bonds told the grand jiri never knowingly used steroids, defense lawyers and prosecutors will begin jury selection tomorrow morning, it's likely they'll present opening statements by tuesday. the giants outfielder set major league baseball's home run record at 762 during his last season with the team in 2007. a merger between two of the u.s. top wireless carriers is in the works tonight. at&t says it will buy t-mobile

from its german owner deutsch tell come. it is valued at 39 billion in cash and company stock. it is the second largest carrier in the nation, t-mobile is the fourth. it will make at&t the largest carrier in the nation. t-mobile is coming off two years of flat revenues as it struggles to compete with at&t and verizon, both companies have approved the deal but it will face tough scrutiny by regulators. trapped in the rubble of their collapsed house since the tsunami. an elderly woman and her grandson rescued. how they have survived. we judge these strikes to have been very effective and debill take iting to the regime's air capability. the coalition is growing. how the libyan government responded to those attacks today. ,,,,,,,,,,,,

earthquake and tsunami charlie gata reports the food supply is showing high levels of radiation and the nuclear plant is yet to be stabilized. >> reporter: fears about contamination from the crippled fukushima nuclear plant are growing after tests of spinach and milk showed elevated levels of radiation. >> the sample says feed, food products recorded radiation level that is over the limits. >> reporter: radioactive iodine was also found in tap water as far away as tokyo. some nuclear experts say the findings are not cause for worry just yet. >> the amount of radiation, even, that has been detected in the food so far in japan, while it's above normal safety limit, it poses no substantial health threat. >> reporter: workers keep spraying water on the most vulnerable areas of the fukushima plant. they are trying to restore power although that's unclear it will restart the plant's cooling system. >> we do not know if the water

launched a second night of air attacks on the city of tripoli hitting and badly damaging one area of gaddafi's compound. as the opponents celebrate the libyan leader vows to fight on. scott ol berg reports from un headquarters. >> reporter: antiaircraft fire flared across the sky over tripoli for the second night in a row. saturday night, allied and u.s. aircraft blasted libya's air defenses and bases and some ground forces. military officials say no allied aircraft were lost and there is no evidence of civilian casualties. >> we judge these strikes to have been very effective and significantly degrading the regime's air defense capability. >> reporter: the pentagon says libyan leader muammar gaddafi is not a target. >> it's limited in scope. i can't say exactly how long it's gone, a that the military part of this will be in effect. >> reporter: in phone calls to

libyan state tv gaddafi remains defiant saying this will be a long war and rebel forces reported heavy fighting in misrada similar to this assault friday. but by night fall a spokesman for libya's armed force, asserted all units will observe the ceasefire. three days after it was authorized the no fly zone is in place and now arab partners are joining the mission. four combat planes will fly with the french air force. the differences in goals are starting to show. libyan reports of civilian casualties would go beyond the scope of what members approved. france is taking the hardest line. >> we consider that it means that gaddafi has to go. >> reporter: that's what these rebel forces in benghazi want. they took to the streets to celebrate the allied attacks that pushed gaddafi away from

has jumped seven cents in just the past two weeks. gas prices are still going up. the price for a gallon of regular has jumped 7 cents in just the past two weeks. the national average is now $3.57 a gallon. again, that's the national average. in the bay area it is much higher, you know that, in san francisco you're pagan average

of $4.02 a gallon for regular, in oakland it's $3.98, it's also $3.98 in san jose. lawrence is back because we have another rainy week ahead, don't we? >> we have a very wet week ahead. this one has got me ahead. everything is so saturated, we have seen the average, the trees coming down, a series of storms coming our direction. today kind of an interesting day. we have that sunshine out there, those dark clouds roll in, get those showers, even the possibility of a thunderstorm popping up around the bay area, things staying very unsettled outside. all right. let's check out your high def doppler radar and still getting active in parts of the south bay. you've got some pretty good sales now that continue to wind down in that direction. look at that towards milpitas now. that storm system beginning to move in that direction. you can see the pockets of moderate amounts of rainfall. down towards las galt owes scattered around the bay area, that's the way it's gonna stay. really the better part of the next 36 hours or so. showers moving eastward now, up

livermore valley, still some scattered showers, trying to make their way through the pleasanton area. we do have scattered showers here. antioch giving you heavier amounts of rainfall. look at the central valley, it is really something out there right now, look at this cell headed towards sacramento and making its way eastward. watch out, big-time storms headed in that direction. here we go, we've got your storm system, continues to bring its moisture, look at the wrap-around moisture beginning to pull back in, that will keep the showers going, partly cloudy skies again, you'll see some sunshine, a possibility of some thunderstorms rumbling on by. numbers right now in the 40s and 50s all around the bay area, i think by day tomorrow you're talking 50s in the central valley, the high country though, they could very well see a lot of snow. of course difficult driving up there. more snow on the way for them over the next few days. this storm system winding on through another area of low pressure off the coastline, helping to latch on to some of

that moisture that pulled it back in toward the bay area. plan on some more raindrops staying unsettled with the possibility of some thunderstorms outside. it's going to be interesting whether ahead. computer model picking up on that, scattered showers continuing, a couple of brief cells may move on by, moderate to heavy rams of rainfall. continuing in for the commute. on and off through the better part of the day. more showers on monday, not a total rain-out but on and off with occasional sunshine and well some fairly cool temperatures mainly into the 50s, but this is where things get interesting. after that we were hoping for a little bit of a break on tuesday. i've upped the storm count here a bit as we expecting that storm to move in. by tuesday afternoon we could start to see that rain, not only that we're going to see some rain and gusty winds, then we have another storm for wednesday, another one for thursday, finally some showers on friday, more rain next weekend, you get the idea. we've got to watch our rivers and creeks very closely over the next several days. >> do the only reason people
